| A special mass for the Holy Childhood Association of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, California was held on October 21, 2009 at the Cathedral of the Holy Angels. It was a beautiful day of celebrating life and liturgy with the young people that came from various parishes in California. Both the elementary and high schools students with their teachers, companions and parents echoed a joyous mission spirit. Monsignor Terry Fleming was the main celebrant, Cardinal Mahoney and other priests, religious sisters were present also. I've never seen the Cathedral so packed on that day. Around the altar, to the sides and way to the back of the church were young missionaries - the hope and the future of the Catholic Church! Fr. Ken Deasy, Director of the Holy Childhood, acknowledged the diverse cultures and ethic backgrounds of the youth present at the celebration . It was a life giving experience for everyone, the oneness of the young missionaries. It was evident that the young people are committed to helping others in different parts of the world through their prayers and financial help. This year the funds raised from the Extra Mile Appeal will help the children of Thailand. The Advent Appeal will go to the children of Nepal and the Lenten Appeal will be sent to help the children of Senegal. There were ten top missionary schools from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles that helped with the fundraising. St. Helen of South Gate a small, humble school was one of the top money raisers. This school raised about $45,000 to help impoverished young people throughout the world. They are to be commended for their great spirit and work. These young missionaries are an inspiration, they prayed fervently and sung with gusto, it was truly a celebration of life, joy and hope. I returned home with the gospel message in my heart " Go out to the whole world and proclaim the Gospel message........" |
