Santa Teresita Chaplain Job Summary

The chaplain is to minister to the spiritual needs of the residents and their families as well as Santa Teresita staff, principally by the sacramental ministry of the Catholic Church.
  
Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide a visible witness and ministry of Christ's presence with compassion, empathy and understanding to the Manor and Bethany residents and their families, as well as Santa Teresita personnel.
  2. Offer the Sacrifice of the Holy Mass on a daily basis as scheduled (6:15 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. on Sundays)
  3. Offer prayer and support to residents and family members who struggle with anxiety, grief, anger, or confusion due to illness or death.
  4. Administer the Sacrament of the Sick monthly to Manor and Bethany residents and when occasion demands, and general sacramental ministry as appropriate and needed.
  5. Visit residents to offer support and compassionate concern, as well as residents of other denominations.
  6. Provide informal and formal religious instruction for the residents and staff such as conducting a day of prayer or in-service on end of life issues according to the Church teaching.
  7. Attending monthly meetings with the Pastoral Care Team.
  8. Wearing clerical garb (Roman collar and clerical suit or cassock/habit) when performing priestly/chaplain functions at Santa Teresita.
  9. Being available for Sacramental ministry for special events, i.e. Auxiliary Day of Prayer.

Qualifications  

  1. Ordination to the Catholic priesthood and continuing ecclesiastical endorsement by the Ordinary of the Los Angeles Archdiocese.Ordination to the Catholic priesthood and continuing ecclesiastical endorsement by the Ordinary of the Los Angeles Archdiocese.
  2. Completion of theological studies for the Bachelor of Divinity degree or its equivalent from a theological seminary approved by the Catholic Church.
  3. At least two years experience as a pastor or associate pastor of a church or as chaplain in the armed services or as an ordained priest in any position comparable to a teacher or director of religious education.
  4. Training and experience in counseling and interpersonal relationships.  While the experience is usually presumed in the priesthood, training ought to be demonstrated by forma, academic courses in fields such as theology, psychology, counseling, ethics, social work, or clinical pastoral education.
  5. Among the many desirable characteristics that might be desired, the chaplain ought to at least evidence a warm, outgoing personality and a sensitivity and empathy for the feelings of others, and a desire to work with people in crisis.
  6. Good physical and psychological health.
  7. Knowledgeable concerning other religious beliefs, Christian and non-Christian.
  8. Professional knowledge of medical-moral matters, the ethical and religious directives of Catholic health facilities, and Canon Law as it relates to the practice of medicine.
  9. Continuing education to update professional skills and knowledge by study and participation in chaplaincy training programs, seminars and workshops.

Chaplain Position

STIPEND - $800 monthly and in addition the following:
  • Medical Insurance is provided in addition to the monthly stipend.
  • Usage of duplex, paid utilities, cable (except phone calls).
  • Weekly linen laundry and cleaning of duplex.
  • Time off for annual retreat and vacation.  Other times only by mutual agreement.
  • Use of the chaplain's office in the Medical Building.
  • Does not include provisions for a car or clerical support.

DUTIES - Includes the following:
  • Two daily Masses as scheduled (6:15 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. on Sunday)
  • Ministering to the spiritual needs of residents and their families.
  • Assuring daily distribution of Holy Communion to the Manor residents.
  • Administering the Sacrament of the Sick monthly to the residents and when occasion demands.
  • General Sacramental ministry when appropriate and needed.
  • Visiting of residents, particularly those in special need, i.e. the seriously and terminally ill, as well as residents of other denominations.
  • Attend monthly meeting with Pastoral Care Team.
  • Wearing clerical garb (Roman collar and clerical suit or cassock/habit) when performing priestly/chaplain functions at Santa Teresita.
  • Be available for Sacramental Ministry for Special Events, i.e. Auxiliary Day of Prayer.
  • Some catechetical work with the staff such as conducting a day of prayer or in-service on End of life issues according to the Church teaching.
MEALS - Meals are served at specific times in the priest's dining room and standard diets are provided.  If there are any special needs other than these, the chaplain provides for his own meals.

HOUSEKEEPING - Room cleaning and linen changes are provided weekly.  This excludes personal laundry since laundry machines are provided in the duplex.

MAINTENANCE - All maintenance, sacristy and other requests are made through the Chaplain Coordinator.

DURATION - The position will be filled by mutual agreement which may be terminated by either party at any time with or without cause.  At time of termination, it is understood that all facility involvement will cease, the chaplain's quarters will be vacated immediately and all keys returned to the Chaplain Coordinator.

OTHER MINISTRIES - It is understood that after fulfilling the chaplain responsibilities, the priest is free to give service elsewhere as time permits.
